Windows 8 Desktop

The Windows 8 Desktop is much like the Desktops of older versions of Windows. The one main exception is that the Start menu is now the "Metro" view. There are Desktop icons, Task Bar, Task Manage and System Tray items on the Windows 8 Desktop. Icons can still be added to the Windows 8 Desktop, and shortcut keys made for those icons. Windows key e still opens Windows File Explorer, and Windows key r still brings up the "Run" command. Alt Tab still moves through the open or running programs. Windows key d or m still puts you on the Windows Desktop. Windows key f will bring up the Windows find command. The "Search" edit box of the Start menu for Windows Vista and Windows 7 is gone, and handle more in the Metro view of Windows 8. Instead to hitting the Windows key to bring up the Start menu, then typing the name of a program and hitting Enter, you hit the Windows key and are taken to the Metro view where you type the name of a program and hit Enter to open that program.

Metro screen for Windows 8 is directly target toward the touch screen technology found on Windows smart phones, Windows 8 tablets, and Windows 8 touch screen laptops. You can purchase a touch screen monitor and attach it to a Windows 8 tower computer, or to a laptop that does not have touch screen capability.
